Go Track By Track On The Swing Sessions With David Campbell

30.11.06
David Campbell is back and singing the catchiest classics around with his new (already Gold) album 'The Swing Sessions'. Backed by a big band, the newest Sultan Of Swings tips his hat to the greats that inspired him to first pick up the mic and become an entertainer on these 13 excellent tunes. Find out why David loves each of these songs so much here in his own words...

You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You...
This song felt like a great way to start the album. It has real swagger and is a real classic. It is a mash up of a "Live" Version of Sinatra's, a "Live" version of Sammy Davis Jnr's and working it myself live last year.

Call Me Irresponsible
This is the first of my tributes to Bobby Darin who is one of my favourite singers. I had a lot of fun with this arrangement. Its short but really sweet.

Mack The Knife
Another Bobby Darin classic. Its a thrill to do an album like this and to be able to tackle some of the best Swing songs. If you aren't snappin' along to this one then I would check your pulse!

The Way You Look Tonight
I have always found this one of the most irresistable melodies around. Fom the first "Someday... " I am hooked. Chong has done a magnificent job on this record all round, but the strings on this are a highlight for me. Grab your loved one and dance reallll slow....

Love Me Or Leave Me
Sammy Davis Jnr. Those words for me say the greatest entertainer of ALL time. The guy who's music got me into swing in the first place. There are several tips of my hat to the Greatest ...This is the first

Can't Take My Eyes Off You
The ultimate brass line of any swing song by Frankie Valli and The four seasons. I first did this song as a request in Orange County L.A. and it was just me and a piano, and the audience sang that famous brass line!

So even though there is a lot of brass on there...I recommend singing along

Birth Of The Blues
Sammy again. A Brilliant song and I had this crazy idea while recording it. Sammy was famous for doing the last part of the song "one more time". No one does that anymore. But ... if it's good enough for Sammy...

All The Way
The Chairman of the Board. Why would I want to tackle the mountain? I didn't at first. Chong had the idea to do it. Boy, it took some convincing too... but he was right. It turned out to be one of my favourite tracks on the album.

Waters Of March
I first did this Jobim song at Rainbow and Stars in NYC in 1998. A brilliant ecological message...is it the first environmental swing song?

Beyond The Sea
Another Bobby Song. This song makes me dance. And that drum solo... wow! I am just so privileged to get to sing such classic material

Mr Bojangles
Sammy's signature tune. I had a video of him at the Bally in Las Vegas performing this song soon before he died. It was like he had become the character. It was a real lesson and i find the story so moving.

With Plenty Of Money
A classic Tony Bennett and Count Basie arrangement. This opened the movie Swingers but was literally only a minute long. So I asked Chong to stretch it out, man his version kicks!

My Funny Valentine
Chet Baker is one of the best jazz interpreters. I think this is a great way to finish the album...unless you're online

She's My Baby
If you are online then you can jet over to itunes and get this "Swingin" re-interpretation of the Johnny O'Keefe Classic.

Thanks for listenin. I hope we get to do it again DC.
